'Bruno' breaks out from the pack

Universal’s “Bruno” dominated the boxoffice competition over its first day in domestic release, ringing up $14.2 million in estimated Friday grosses.

The latest Sacha Baron Cohen send-up – in which he portrays a fictional gay fashionista from Austria looking to make it big as a U.S. media celeb – remains well on track to open with $30 million or more in U.S. and Canadian coin through Sunday. The Friday bow for R-rated “Bruno” compares to a first-day haul of $9.2 million for Baron Cohen’s 2006’s laugher “Borat,” also an R-rated release that rung up $26.5 million during its first weekend and $128.5 million in total domestically.

Universal paid “Bruno” producer Media Rights Capital $42.5 million in acquiring domestic and limited foreign rights on the pic and also committed to significant back-end payouts. “Bruno” is playing in 2,756 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, compared with just 837 playdates for “Borat” during its opening weekend.

Elsewhere Friday, Fox’s PG-13 high school comedy “I Love You, Beth Cooper,” directed by Chris Columbus, registered $2.1 million in its first day of release, placing it seventh among the daily boxoffice rankings.

Fox’s 3D animated comedy “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” was second among all Friday grossers, with $8.4 million in coin from its 10th day in release pushing domestic cume past $100 million, at an estimated $100.4 million.

Paramount’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” was third with $7.6 million and a whopping $322.6 million cume at the start of its third weekend in release.

Universal’s Johnny Depp starr “Public Enemies” was fourth with $4.3 million on the day and a $56.7 million cume.

Hilton Takes the Stand to Slam Failed Publicity Claims

Paris Hilton took to the stand in a Miami court on Friday -- hitting out at allegations that she failed to fully promote her 2006 movie flop Pledge This!.

The hotel heiress is being sued for breach of contract by bosses at Worldwide Entertainment Group Inc., who claim she neglected to honor promotion and publicity agreements for the film and owes investors a massive $8.3 million.

The movie executives claim Hilton was paid $1 million for her acting services and for "reasonable promotion and publicity" for the film, which featured the socialite/actress as the president of an exclusive sorority. After the socialite's legal team failed to get the lawsuit dismissed in May, Hilton was forced to attend the trial to defend herself against the claims.

In true Hilton style, the hotel heiress attended court in a black dress and high stilettos, and even gave the judge a cheeky wave. She told the courtroom that the film's failure had nothing to do with her -- insisting she takes promotional work for her ventures very seriously.

She told Judge Federico Moreno, "If I have my name attached to something, I want it to be as big as it can be." Hilton went on to admit that by the time it was expected for her to promote the DVD release of the film, she was already booked up for rehearsals for her next film, The Hottie and the Nottie, in 2008.

‘Project Runway’ Season 6 Contestants Unveiled

Project Runway” finally makes it’s highly anticipated return to TV, now airing on Lifetime, on August 20 – and Access has the first glimpse of the 16 contestants who will be vying to be most “in” with judges Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia.

The crop of couture hopefuls ranges in age from 24 to 50 and come from as far away as Yugoslavia, the Republic of Georgia and Russia.

For the first time, the reality competition will take place in LA and is said to involve Hollywood and various red carpets events during the course of the season.

“Runway’s” style guru and mentor Tim Gunn returns and gave People his thoughts on the contestants. Tim told the mag that LA native Johnny Sakalis “will be polarizing. People will love him, or hate him.”

Meanwhile, 25-year-old blonde bombshell Althea Harper isn’t just a pretty face according to Tim.

“Everyone [thinks] she’s only on the show because she’s a tall blond beauty. But she’s extremely talented. She’s going to blow people away,” he said.

Qristyl Frazier, 42, lists Halle Berry, Whitney Houston and Gwyneth Paltrow as her style icons and according to Tim, “likes a lot of color, and print,” along with being a “hoot.”

Seattle native Logan Neitzel might surprise audiences with his interests. Tim describes him as “guy’s guy” who digs snowboarding and cars while still loving John Galliano and Tom Ford.

Ari Fish is sure to be controversial in the design room, as she doesn’t drape or sketch any of her designs. Tim describes the self-taught Kansas City, Mo., native as “deeply conceptual.” Some of her influences include geometry, ergonomics and nomadic tribal wear.

The tears might flow from 30-year-old Christopher Straub, who Tim says is “very sensitive, very emotional [and] wears his emotions on his sleeve.” The Shakopee, Minnesota resident is major fan of former “Runway” guest judge and style icon Victoria Beckham.

And Yugoslavia-born Gordana Gehlhausen, who already owns her own boutique in San Diego, should keep the judges and audiences on their toes with her “textile development,” Tim explained. “It wouldn’t be a case of going shopping and using the fabric she brought back. She’d do things to it.”

Catch all the design drama starting on August 20 at 10 PM EST on Lifetime.

Cameron Diaz In Talks For ‘Green Hornet’

Cameron Diaz may star alongside Seth Rogen in “Green Hornet,” Entertainment Weekly reported.

According to the mag, the star is in “early talks” for the role of the female lead in the superhero movie, due out July 9, 2010.

It wouldn’t be Cameron’s first time starring opposite a green-faced co-star – she made her Hollywood debut as blonde bombshell Tina Carlyle in 1994’s “The Mask,” which starred Jim Carrey in the title role, as well as voicing the animated ogre Princess Fiona in the “Shrek” franchise.

In the coming months, though, Cameron can been seen in less spandex-ready roles, currently starring as the matriarch of cancer drama “My Sister’s Keeper,” and opposite James Marsden in the upcoming sci-fi thriller “The Box,” due in October.

Affleck: 'Lopez Was Bad For My Career'

Ben Affleck has spoken out about his high-profile relationship with former girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, insisting it was bad for his movie career.

The actor began dating the singer in 2002 after starring in Gigli with her, and the pair later became engaged before splitting up shortly before their scheduled wedding in 2004.

Affleck is adamant he should never have got involved in the first place - because the publicity surrounding their romance tainted his career.

He says, "I was no longer in control of my life. I thought I wanted certain things, but I didn't. I got lost. I felt suffocated, miserable and gross. I should never have gone down that route or got sucked in to all the publicity.

"I was typecast as myself. Too many people weren't getting past what they read about me. That was damaging. I can tell from experience it's bad for you, and bad for your career. So I took a break, went away for a while and let things calm down."

And he admits he is much happier with his wife Jennifer Garner and their two daughters, three-year-old Violet and six-month-old Seraphina to look after.

He adds, "Work has taken a back seat. My job is not as important as it was. Saying that having a family changed my life is a cliche. But it's true, it re-arranged my life and made me see clearly."
