'Bruno' breaks out from the pack

Universal’s “Bruno” dominated the boxoffice competition over its first day in domestic release, ringing up $14.2 million in estimated Friday grosses.

The latest Sacha Baron Cohen send-up – in which he portrays a fictional gay fashionista from Austria looking to make it big as a U.S. media celeb – remains well on track to open with $30 million or more in U.S. and Canadian coin through Sunday. The Friday bow for R-rated “Bruno” compares to a first-day haul of $9.2 million for Baron Cohen’s 2006’s laugher “Borat,” also an R-rated release that rung up $26.5 million during its first weekend and $128.5 million in total domestically.

Universal paid “Bruno” producer Media Rights Capital $42.5 million in acquiring domestic and limited foreign rights on the pic and also committed to significant back-end payouts. “Bruno” is playing in 2,756 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, compared with just 837 playdates for “Borat” during its opening weekend.

Elsewhere Friday, Fox’s PG-13 high school comedy “I Love You, Beth Cooper,” directed by Chris Columbus, registered $2.1 million in its first day of release, placing it seventh among the daily boxoffice rankings.

Fox’s 3D animated comedy “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” was second among all Friday grossers, with $8.4 million in coin from its 10th day in release pushing domestic cume past $100 million, at an estimated $100.4 million.

Paramount’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” was third with $7.6 million and a whopping $322.6 million cume at the start of its third weekend in release.

Universal’s Johnny Depp starr “Public Enemies” was fourth with $4.3 million on the day and a $56.7 million cume.

Hilton Takes the Stand to Slam Failed Publicity Claims

Paris Hilton took to the stand in a Miami court on Friday -- hitting out at allegations that she failed to fully promote her 2006 movie flop Pledge This!.

The hotel heiress is being sued for breach of contract by bosses at Worldwide Entertainment Group Inc., who claim she neglected to honor promotion and publicity agreements for the film and owes investors a massive $8.3 million.

The movie executives claim Hilton was paid $1 million for her acting services and for "reasonable promotion and publicity" for the film, which featured the socialite/actress as the president of an exclusive sorority. After the socialite's legal team failed to get the lawsuit dismissed in May, Hilton was forced to attend the trial to defend herself against the claims.

In true Hilton style, the hotel heiress attended court in a black dress and high stilettos, and even gave the judge a cheeky wave. She told the courtroom that the film's failure had nothing to do with her -- insisting she takes promotional work for her ventures very seriously.

She told Judge Federico Moreno, "If I have my name attached to something, I want it to be as big as it can be." Hilton went on to admit that by the time it was expected for her to promote the DVD release of the film, she was already booked up for rehearsals for her next film, The Hottie and the Nottie, in 2008.

‘Project Runway’ Season 6 Contestants Unveiled

Project Runway” finally makes it’s highly anticipated return to TV, now airing on Lifetime, on August 20 – and Access has the first glimpse of the 16 contestants who will be vying to be most “in” with judges Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia.

The crop of couture hopefuls ranges in age from 24 to 50 and come from as far away as Yugoslavia, the Republic of Georgia and Russia.

For the first time, the reality competition will take place in LA and is said to involve Hollywood and various red carpets events during the course of the season.

“Runway’s” style guru and mentor Tim Gunn returns and gave People his thoughts on the contestants. Tim told the mag that LA native Johnny Sakalis “will be polarizing. People will love him, or hate him.”

Meanwhile, 25-year-old blonde bombshell Althea Harper isn’t just a pretty face according to Tim.

“Everyone [thinks] she’s only on the show because she’s a tall blond beauty. But she’s extremely talented. She’s going to blow people away,” he said.

Qristyl Frazier, 42, lists Halle Berry, Whitney Houston and Gwyneth Paltrow as her style icons and according to Tim, “likes a lot of color, and print,” along with being a “hoot.”

Seattle native Logan Neitzel might surprise audiences with his interests. Tim describes him as “guy’s guy” who digs snowboarding and cars while still loving John Galliano and Tom Ford.

Ari Fish is sure to be controversial in the design room, as she doesn’t drape or sketch any of her designs. Tim describes the self-taught Kansas City, Mo., native as “deeply conceptual.” Some of her influences include geometry, ergonomics and nomadic tribal wear.

The tears might flow from 30-year-old Christopher Straub, who Tim says is “very sensitive, very emotional [and] wears his emotions on his sleeve.” The Shakopee, Minnesota resident is major fan of former “Runway” guest judge and style icon Victoria Beckham.

And Yugoslavia-born Gordana Gehlhausen, who already owns her own boutique in San Diego, should keep the judges and audiences on their toes with her “textile development,” Tim explained. “It wouldn’t be a case of going shopping and using the fabric she brought back. She’d do things to it.”

Catch all the design drama starting on August 20 at 10 PM EST on Lifetime.

Cameron Diaz In Talks For ‘Green Hornet’

Cameron Diaz may star alongside Seth Rogen in “Green Hornet,” Entertainment Weekly reported.

According to the mag, the star is in “early talks” for the role of the female lead in the superhero movie, due out July 9, 2010.

It wouldn’t be Cameron’s first time starring opposite a green-faced co-star – she made her Hollywood debut as blonde bombshell Tina Carlyle in 1994’s “The Mask,” which starred Jim Carrey in the title role, as well as voicing the animated ogre Princess Fiona in the “Shrek” franchise.

In the coming months, though, Cameron can been seen in less spandex-ready roles, currently starring as the matriarch of cancer drama “My Sister’s Keeper,” and opposite James Marsden in the upcoming sci-fi thriller “The Box,” due in October.

Affleck: 'Lopez Was Bad For My Career'

Ben Affleck has spoken out about his high-profile relationship with former girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, insisting it was bad for his movie career.

The actor began dating the singer in 2002 after starring in Gigli with her, and the pair later became engaged before splitting up shortly before their scheduled wedding in 2004.

Affleck is adamant he should never have got involved in the first place - because the publicity surrounding their romance tainted his career.

He says, "I was no longer in control of my life. I thought I wanted certain things, but I didn't. I got lost. I felt suffocated, miserable and gross. I should never have gone down that route or got sucked in to all the publicity.

"I was typecast as myself. Too many people weren't getting past what they read about me. That was damaging. I can tell from experience it's bad for you, and bad for your career. So I took a break, went away for a while and let things calm down."

And he admits he is much happier with his wife Jennifer Garner and their two daughters, three-year-old Violet and six-month-old Seraphina to look after.

He adds, "Work has taken a back seat. My job is not as important as it was. Saying that having a family changed my life is a cliche. But it's true, it re-arranged my life and made me see clearly."

A Love Story' to Open October 2

Michael Moore has unveiled the title of his upcoming documentary. Capitalism: A Love Story will be released on October 2. The film, which addresses the causes of the global economic meltdown, will be "the perfect date movie," Moore said in an announcement Wednesday.

"It's got it all -- lust, passion, romance and 14,000 jobs being eliminated every day. It's a forbidden love, one that dare not speak its name. Heck, let's just say it: It's capitalism."

Moore and Overture Films had announced previously that the film would be released domestically on Oct. 2. Paramount Vantage will handle international distribution.

Variety says the film is described as focusing on "the disastrous impact that corporate dominance and out-of-control profit motives have on the lives of Americans and citizens of the world."

Acting Legend Karl Malden Dead At 97

Oscar winner Karl Malden has died at his home in Brentwood, California, three years shy of his 100th birthday.

The Streets of San Francisco star was born in Chicago in 1912 and raised in Gary, Indiana -- ironically the birthplace of Michael Jackson, who died last week.

A former steelworker and teacher, Malden studied acting at the Goodman Theater Dramatic School in Chicago and chose to take his talents to New York, where he became involved with the fabled Group Theater.

He made his stage debut in 1937 and struck up a theatrical partnership with legendary director Elia Kazan, who cast Malden in a host of successful Broadway shows.

After serving in World War Two, the actor landed his big movie break in 1940's They Knew What They Wanted, and he quickly became an in-demand film star, winning an Oscar for his performance as Mitch in A Streetcar Named Desire in 1951.

He also landed roles in classics like On the Waterfront and Baby Doll.

Malden became a household name when he teamed up with Michael Douglas in TV cop drama The Streets of San Francisco in the early 1970s.

He also became the pitchman for American Express -- a position he held for 21 years. In 1988, he was elected President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences -- a title he held for five years. Malden's memoir is called When Do I Start?: A Memoir.

As well as his Best Supporting Actor Oscar win in 1951, Malden also claimed an Outstanding Supporting Actor Emmy in 1985 for the TV series Fatal Vision.

Malden was honored with life achievement awards at the Temecula Valley International Film Festival in 1998 and the Screen Actors Guild Awards of 2004.

His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame can be found at 6231 Hollywood Boulevard.

Jackson's 'Secret Wife' Files New Suit in Los Angeles

The woman who claimed she was the biological mother of Michael Jackson's three children has re-filed her family law case in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Nona Paris Lola Ankhesenamun Jackson, who has claimed to be Jackson's secret wife, filed for a legal separation from the King of Pop in December 2008 and prior to that went public with claims that she carried the pop star's children, Paris, Prince Michael and Prince Michael II, to term -- and called Jackson's official ex, Debbie Rowe, an impostor.

The woman, who has described herself as "a black Jew born in Britain," also went to court in 2006 in a bid to lay claim to Jackson's Neverland Ranch, child support payments and shared custody of the pop star's three children.

Nona Jackson claimed she's known Jackson since he was a teenager, and that she's written over 3,000 songs for him.

The lawsuit was thrown out in 2006 and rejected again in 2007, but the case wasn't dismissed completely -- Nona Jackson was told to make a better presentation of her evidence.

Following Jackson's death last week, Nona Jackson posted a heartfelt message online, stating, "I have become a widow, I have paid ultimately for loving Michael Jackson but it is all I have to give him, the gift of eternity. He had to be loved even once in this lifetime and I have done that. I too, can die in peace some day."

She signed off as "Michael Jackson's wife, Nona Paris Lola Ankhesenamun Jackson."

As WENN went to press, it is not known exactly what the woman is demanding in her new suit, filed this morning.

Kevin Jonas has stunned fans of the Jonas Brothers by asking his girlfriend Danielle Deleasa to marry him.

Hargitay, Meloni returning to 'SVU'

"Law & Order: SVU" will return with its two stars on board.

After on-again, off-again negotiations, Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni have inked new deals to continue on the crime procedural, which is coming back in the fall for its 11th season.

Additionally, Christine Lahti has signed on to play the assistant district attorney on the veteran series for the first four episodes. Stephanie March will return after that to reprise her role as ADA Alexandra Cabot.

Sources said Hargitay and Meloni, who regularly negotiate their contracts together, have inked one-year deals with an option for a second year.

Despite the conglomerates and particularly NBC Universal being in cost-cutting mode, Hargitay and Meloni are said to have boosted their most recent salaries of about $385,000 an episode. In a rare feat for show talent, they have been able to negotiate a piece of "SVU's" lucrative back end, sources said.
Taking all into account, Hargitay's and Meloni's paychecks are expected to grow to more than $400,000 an episode, solidifying Hargitay's position as the highest-paid woman in television and Meloni as one of the top male earners.

All parties involved declined Monday to comment on the terms of the agreement.

Hargitay and Meloni's deals come more than a month after NBC closed a deal with Wolf Films for "SVU's" renewal. At the time, NBC brass said the show would return with or without its stars as the networks and reps for the actors had reached an impasse.

The two sides resumed talks at the beginning of June and, after a series of sessions, the deals were finalized last week.

Crime procedurals are more resilient than character dramas in replacing leads, but losing both Hargitay and Meloni, considered the heart of the show, was a potential big blow to "SVU."

Hargitay is repped by Paradigm. Meloni is repped by Gersh.

Michael Jackson's mom eyes his estate

Michael Jackson's mother, having won temporary guardianship of her late son's three children, is now attempting to take control of the King of Pop's estate, according to a person close to the court proceedings.

Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff granted Katherine Jackson temporary guardianship of the children on Monday. He also scheduled a hearing for Aug. 3 on Jackson's petition to become permanent guardian of her son's children. The petition also seeks to name Jackson as administrator of the children's estates, but the judge did not grant that request.

Katherine Jackson filed another court action Monday, seeking to take control of her son's estate, according to a person close to the proceedings who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and requested anonymity. She is taking that action with the intent of protecting Jackson's legacy, the person said.

Jackson left behind three children: Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., known as Prince Michael, 12; Paris Michael Katherine Jackson, 11; and Prince Michael II, 7. The youngest son was born to a surrogate mother.

In the request to take over the children's estate, Jackson, 79, lists its value as "unknown."

The filing lists the children as living at the Jacksons' family compound in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley.

"Minor children are currently residing with paternal grandmother," the filing states in an explanation of why Katherine Jackson should be appointed guardian. "They have a long established relationship with paternal grandmother and are comfortable in her care."

The filings provide no other declarations by Katherine Jackson, nor do they state whether Michael Jackson left a will.

The filings note that Deborah Rowe is the mother of Jackson's two eldest children, but list her whereabouts as "unknown." An e-mail message sent to Rowe's attorney seeking comment wasn't immediately returned Monday morning.

For Michael Jackson's third child, nicknamed as Blanket, the filing states "None" for the mother.

Fox Finds Romance With LaBeouf

Megan Fox has sparked rumors that she's moved on from ex-fiancé Brian Austin Green and into the arms of Transformers co-star Shia LaBeouf.

The 23-year-old actress ended her engagement to Green, 35, earlier this year. The couple subsequently tried to work through their problems, but Fox has now confirmed that the romance is officially over.

She already appears to have moved on from the split and chosen a new suitor in 23-year-old LaBeouf -- they were spotted dining together in New York.

According to the New York Daily News, the pair turned heads as they sat side by side during a dinner with 10 friends on Thursday, days after attending a West Hollywood party together.

A source says, “They definitely seemed into each other... Shia couldn’t keep his eyes off of Megan. He literally watched her like a hawk all night.”

The reports follow LaBeouf's own confession just last week that he feels a real chemistry with his sexy co-star, telling reporters, "I'm a 23-year-old red-blooded male, so sure, there's a lot of real there. She's a beautiful woman."

Thanks to a $201 million haul for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf were on top of the box office this weekend.

'I Will Love Michael Forever'- Taylor

Screen legend Elizabeth Taylor has issued a broken-hearted statement about her longtime friendship with Michael Jackson.

Taylor sparked a medical emergency of her own when she collapsed in her Hollywood home after hearing about Jackson's sudden death on Thursday. The singer passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest at the age of 50.

The 77-year-old actress -- who coined the phrase "King of Pop" as she presented him with an award in 1989 -- was visited at her home by a personal physician in the hours following Jackson's death.

She has now overcome her medical scare and issued an emotional message, revealing that she was due to visit Jackson in a few short weeks as he prepared for his comeback concerts in London.
She says, "My heart... my mind... are broken. I loved Michael with all my soul and I can't imagine life without him. We had so much in common; we had such loving fun together. I was packing up my clothes to go to London for his opening when I heard the news. I still can't believe it. I don't want to believe it. It can't be so. He will live in my heart forever but it's not enough. My life feels so empty. I don't think anyone knew how much we loved each other. The purest, most giving love I've ever known. Oh, God! I'm going to miss him. I can't yet imagine life without him. But I guess with God's help... I'll learn. I keep looking at the photo he gave me of himself, which says, 'To my true love Elizabeth, I love you forever.' And, I will love him forever."
